Here are some great reasons why you should visit Tavira, including things to do, where to shop and eat. If you'd like to escape the touristy Algarve to a charming town with cute streets, colorful houses, and cool shops, then Tavira is a must-visit.
I went on a day trip to Tavira and absolutely fell in love with the town. It is probably one of my favorite cities in the Algarve.
1. Visit Tavira to experience the real Algarve
Tavira offers a break from tourist crowds and all-inclusive resorts. Here you will mix with the locals, discover old buildings and houses, and get to enjoy a mix of Roman, Arab and Christian heritage.
2. Visit Tavira to enjoy its beautiful old town
The old town is an excellent place to see the culture and history of Algarve. The narrow streets are filled with traditional houses decorated in beautiful azulejo tiles and doorways from the Moorish times. Here you will also find many churches and a beautiful Roman bridge crossing the Gilão river. Don't forget to climb up to the ancient Castle of Tavira, to enjoy panoramic views over the city.
3. Visit Tavira to shop unique, handmade pieces
Tavira has a great selection of unique shops and concept stores. Casa das Portas is a well-known shop in Tavira, filled with jewelry, home decoration, and other artisanal goodies. My other favorites are Kozii, offering clothing and home textiles in beautiful designs and fabric composition. And Ozadi, a concept store with great beauty products.
4. Visit Tavira to taste some seriously good food
There is no shortage of delicious, authentic restaurants in Tavira. Here are my favorites:

Aquasul - a local favorite with delicious food, lovely owners and wonderful ambiance
D'gusta - a popular place with tasty tapas dishes
